Official Tour Press Release:
March 22nd New York – For immediate release. "I'm happy to confirm the rumors. Madonna will be going out on tour this spring and summer," announced the star's long time manager, Caresse Henry. Clear Channel Entertainment is the promoter of Madonna's worldwide tour, which begins in Los Angeles on May 24th.

The tour will sweep across major markets in the US including Los Angeles, San Francisco, New York, Boston, Philadelphia, Chicago, Atlanta and Miami and then continue with stops in London, Paris and proposed visits to Israel and Ireland.

According to Ms. Henry, "Madonna has already started rehearsals for 'The re-Invention Tour' and she can't wait to get back on stage to recreate her songs from the earliest days of her career up until the present. There is no doubt that this tour will be the pinnacle of her long standing and well deserved reputation as one of the most exciting live performers of our time. Interesting Facts:
  • Madonna's first time on the road in 8 years.
  • Tour hit only Europe and America.
  • Tour was to start in Cologne, Germany on June 5. First German dates were cancelled "due to technical difficulties."
  • In protest of the cancelled German shows, some fans vowed to throw their Madonna CDs in the garbage.
  • A 26-year-old Frankfurt fan won a free concert ticket to a Berlin show in exchange for sex with a reporter for a German online magazine.
  • Celebrities wanting to see the concert had to pay for their own tickets. No freebies.
  • Shireen Ritchie, Guy Ritchie's mother, reported that she and her family were "wowed out of our skins," after seeing their daughter-in-law perform.
  • When the tour hit America, Madonna changed her costume, as well as replaced "Gone" with a stunning performance of "You'll See". Never in Madonna's career has she changed her song line-up.
  • Madonna performed "You'll See" (instead of Gone) in Philly, New York City, Boston, Atlanta, and Miami.
  • She performed "Gone" in Washington DC, New Jersey, Los Angeles, Oakland, Vegas, Detroit, and Chicago.
  • The second show in New Jersey for August 3rd was canceled because of throat problems.
  • The September 11th show in Los Angeles was delayed because of the terrorist attacks on America. When Madonna took the stage to complete the last three shows she wore an American flag skirt. She also turned down the violence in the show including the removal of the shooting of another character and also removing the gory "Oh Dear Daddy" from the performances.
  • Profits from the final three shows in Los Angeles were donated to the children of the victims of the attacks.

Tour Started: September 25, 1993 - Wembley Stadium, London
Tour Ended: December 19, 1993 - Tokyo Dome, Tokyo, Japan
Costumes by: Dolce and Gabbana

Interesting Facts:
  • Some venues forbade toplessness, so Carrie Inaba had to wear a halter top to conceal her assets.
  • In Toronto Madonna held up traffic when she jogged through the streets.
  • Orthodox Jews staged protests to cancel Madonna's first-ever show in Israel.
  • In Puerto Rico, an uproar was caused when Madonna rubbed the Puerto Rican flag between her legs on stage.
  • Caught by reporters at the birthplace of Christ in Jerusalem, Madonna called them "sons of whores" and hurled other vicious slurs in Hebrew and Arabic, then dodged a meeting with Mayor Teddy Koleck.
  • The Girlie Show required 1500 costumes for the cast, and a 24-hour set up time for the enormous stage.
Review:
"Why does the rhetoric of fiaso and decline hover over the production like a vulture? Forget the naysayers - the wise thing to do is try to get tickets. Madonna may have failed at other things, but her stage performance - her fluent and daring dancers imagination, her genius for iconographic playfulness, her libertine expansiveness - is a wonder of our times." - The New Yorker.

Opening Act: Technotronic
Tour Opened: April 13 at Marine Stadium, Makuhari [Japan]
Tour Ended: August 5 in Nice, France
Costumes: Jean-Paul Gautier
Interesting Facts:
  • Blond Ambition was the first mega tour of the nineties. It hit 27 cities over four months and sold out in every city, except Italy, where for weeks prior to the shows, the Pope had called for a boycott, resulting in the cancellation of one of the two shows planned.
  • 18 trucks were used to get the 80x70-foot stage around. Over a hundred crew members spent two full days assembling the monstrous stage for every show.
  • Choreographer Vincent Patterson recalls that Madonna wanted to "break every rule we can ... She wanted to make statements about sexuality, cross sexuality, the church ... But the biggest thing we tried to do is change the shape of concerts. Instead of just presenting songs, we wanted to combine fashion, Broadway, rock and the performance arts." And in the words of author, and good friend Matthew Rettenmund, "They succeeded".
  • Pioneer Electronics sponsored the tour (Pepsi withdrew sponsorship after the "Like A Prayer" incident). It sponsored in exchange for rights to an exclusive laserdisc of the show, plus additional footage, Madonna promised not to release a competing video version for at least one year. However, since a video version in 1991 would compete with the May 1991 film, Truth or Dare, all plans were cancelled.
  • Maclean's said the show "unfolds like a kaleidoscope of sexual decadence. The references range from Berlin cabarets to New York leather bars."
  • Rollingstone called it "a nifty summation of the spectacle that is Madonna."
  • Because of costly problems to Madonna's voice, four shows were cancelled (Chicago; Worcester, Massachusetts; Philadelphia, and a New York show in the Brendan Byrne Arena).
  • Proceeds from the final New York show were donated to AMFAR totalling $300,000.
  • In Toronto, the police received complaints that the show was lewd, and they threatened to charge Madonna if she did not agree to alter the masturbation scene during Like A Virgin. She refused to make the changes, yet no charges were made.
  • HBO filmed and telecasted the final Blond Ambition show from Nice, France. It became the then highest rating concert event in HBO history.
