Tidal Launch Event

After a big countdown and star-studded teaser, Alicia Keys emceed an all-star livestreamed announcement about Tidal — the high-quality music streaming service Jay Z recently purchased — on Monday (March 30).

“Our mission goes beyond commerce and technology,” Keys promised. “Our intent is to preserve music’s importance in our lives. It’s the world’s true universal language.”

Tidal features the following A-list stakeholders: Jay Z, Madonna, Taylor Swift,Beyonce, Kanye West, Jason Aldean, Daft Punk, Rihanna, Colplday‘s Chris Martin, Usher, Nicki Minaj, Jack White, Calvin Harris, Arcade Fire‘s Win Butler and Regine Chassagne, deadmau5, J. Cole and Alicia Keys.

Either in person or via video chat, all of those artists participated in the livestream. Those present at the New York event made a ceremony out of signing a declaration of their intentions to boost this artist-owned music streaming service on the livestream.

To the sound of Radiohead’s “National Anthem,” the collection of singers, rockers, DJs and rappers signed a piece of paper, one after another. Madonna made a point to straddle the table. Because… Madonna.
